The legislative framework that will allow Russia’s Gazprom to include gas supplies to Ukraine in the payments for gas transit is being drafted, an information source told Russia’s Interfax.
Several ministries and departments in Russia have already supported the initiative.
As a reminder, after the suspension of gas supplies to Ukraine due to the dispute over the price of gas and accumulated debts, Gazprom has repeatedly tried to pay for transit and transfer money included in the payment for gas transit to Europe to Naftogaz of Ukraine. However, the latter sent the money back as the Ukrainian company is contesting the rate of transit.
As a result, Naftogaz is not the only party in debt to Gazprom for delivered gas. Indeed, Gazprom is also in debt to Naftogaz for gas transit fees.
As Capital reported, on June 16 Russia switched Ukraine to pre-payment of gas and suspended gas supplies to the country to cover the debts.
Since then the two sides with the involvement of the European Union have been trying to reach an agreement on a new price and the renewal of gas supplies.
