The National Bank of Ukraine will be penalizing banks for not selling foreign currency received at auctions via their cash desks, NBU Governor Valeriya Hontareva has announced during a panel discussion "Stable exchange rate: reality or illusion?".
"Sold USD 60 million at the auction on Thursday for cash support. Banks must report daily on sale of this currency," she said.
The NBU invited journalists to go visit banks and check for availability of currency.
"Let's step into any bank office and if the bank is not selling currency there would be grounds for penalty," she stressed.
Ukrgasbank Chief Executive Officer Serhii Mamedov in his turn said that his bank had been selling currency at the cash desks since Friday.
"Began selling currency on Friday after noon. We split up the currency received at the auction at the limit of 200,000 a day. For example, we sold just 175,000 on Friday. Which is to say even not the limit," he said.
Remind, on October 2 the National Bank filled 100% bids at the currency auction for banks' cash support and sold USD 60.3 million.
