Ukraine's national oil and gas company Naftogaz Ukrainy is planning to buy up to 1.5 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas from Russia's Gazprom by the end of this year and up to 1 bcm in the first quarter of 2015, Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Minister Yuriy Prodan said.
"Our preliminary plans are to buy up to 1.5 billion cubic meters of gas by the end of the year, and depending on the weather, up to 1 bcm next [year]," he said in an interview with the New Times (Novoye Vremya) published on Friday.
Prodan has previously stated that Ukraine did not currently have a need for Russian gas since the country had the necessary reserves. He added that these reserves could cover peak consumption in Ukraine if there is a cold snap.
Prodan also said Naftogaz Ukrainy and Gazprom were in close contact and Ukraine was working on a bid for the volume of gas it needs.
