Ukraine's energy company Naftogaz Ukrainy will pay Gazprom for the delivery of about 1 billion cubic meters of gas on Wednesday or Thursday, Energy and Coal Industry Minister Volodymyr Demchyshyn said.
"I think even today," Demchyshyn said at a press conference in Kyiv on Wednesday when asked when the payment could be made.
Gazprom had earlier forwarded a bill to Naftogaz for December gas deliveries.
Ukraine had said earlier that it could buy up to 1.5 billion cubic meters of gas in 2014 and up to 1 billion cubic meters in the first quarter of 2015, although the exact volumes would be determined depending on weather and the amount of gas it would receive through reverse-flow supplies from European countries.
In line with agreements signed in Brussels, Ukraine will receive Russian gas at $378 per 1,000 cubic meters by the end of 2014 and at $368 for 1,000 cubic meters in the first quarter of 2015. Russia will supply gas to Ukraine on a prepayment basis.
Ukraine can buy gas in the first quarter of 2015 on condition that it repays $1.65 billion for the previous deliveries by the end of 2014.
